Trailier Conventions

Which trailer conventions are present in these trailers?
How are the trailer conventions used to promote the film to an audience?
the conventions that both of these trailers follow is the use of slow paced and fast paced scene changes, this makes the audience feel excited as the tempo of the of changing scenes is either fast or slow. Another way that trailer conventions are followed in both films is the name of the film is presented at first; this is so that audiences are familiar with the film name. With both trailers, questions are left at the end so the audience are left in a mystery and would convince them more to see the film.
With both trailers, key moments from the film are showed in order to encourage the audiences to see the film. Both directors’ uses this as audiences gain familiarity with the film and have a slight idea of what the film may be about. As the camera is mainly focused on the main protagonists in the film, the audience wonder what will happen to them. This is a great of reeling in audiences.  Both directors’ names are shown in the trailers and as they are famous directors, audience have an advantage as they think that the film is going to be successful.
The on screen text at the start of the trailer says “the people’s choice award” this obviously shows that the film is so successful that it has won a award. The directors of slumdog millionaire do this on purpose to show what awards their piece of work has won. Another feature that the director has used is a quote from the Chicago sun newspaper editor and he describes this film as being a “triumph” which encourages more people to see this film.
Another way that this trailer persuades audiences to see this film is through the use of the plot. Text in the trailer gives the audience a slight brief to the story line. We see a great example of this in the slumdog millionaire trailer, when it says the main protagonist is 1 question away from winning 20 million rupees? 4 options are displayed and the last one which is “it is his destiny” slowly fades away which suggest that it was his destiny and the film would be about his life.
Which trailer do you think is more successful? Why?
I think that the slumdog millionaire trailer is more successful as it shows more conventions which persuade people in order to see the film. It shows a depth into the film storyline and engages with a broad target audience. This film aims at families and people of all ages who enjoy watching films that have great meanings and morals. With a great way of advertising its awards and 1 review of the film, it strives to show its audiences that it is the best film and by you watching the film, you would almost certainly agree.

Contemporary film trailer

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lB95KLmpLR4

What techniques does this trailer use to persuade an audience to see the film?
This trailer uses many key techniques in order to persuade an audience to the film “the social network”. One way that the director has chosen to do is to show some of the main parts of the film. The director has used Todorovs theory and has shown an equilibrium at the start which slowly turned into a disequilibrium. But the key main factor the director has left out is the new equilibrium. By doing this, it makes the audience want to see the movie as they are interested in the film and would like to know what happens to the main protagonist in the film. This is a great of way of persuading customers to see this particular film.

How are men represented in this trailer?
Men are represented in this trailer as being very superior. The start of the trailer we see many pictures of males and females but as we get halfway into the film the trailer the dialogue starts and are introduced by a male character. This is supposedly the main protagonist of the film and he is representing dominant ideology. The director has used him as many of the audiences feel as if they can relate to this character. The character is following the key concepts of being a white male who is properly middle aged , middle of class, heterosexual and is able bodied

On the basis of this trailer, what target audience would be attracted to this film?
In my own opinion I think that this trailer is aimed at potentially 15 – 40 years of age due to the film itself. The target audience is most properly aimed at people who have a facebook account or people who have heard about facebook and want to learn more about it. The age rating for this film is 12A which also indicated what standards the director has made this movie for.  Potentially people in the C1, D & E category would most likely to the audiences of this film.

What Hollywood values and characteristics can you identify in this trailer?
In this trailer some Hollywood values and characteristics are shown through the use of the characters. In the trailer we tend to see a lot of shots in an office and many people are dressed formally. This is a Hollywood characteristic as it representing that everyone means business and show it through the way they are dressed. Another scene that shows Hollywood values is the scene when two characters are in a night club, this shows the more glamorous and partying side to Hollywood characteristics.

Summary of 2 articles

Its perspective is from one of the friends and talks about how excited and eager she is to meet more famous people.
The target market of the TV program is mentioned briefly and categorised their market as the “ S club 7” it also mentions how the show is run for 3 minutes and has many competitors which are reaching is creative reach.

Kill Bill Analysis

Firstly the scene starts off with an extreme close up of the two main female protagonists in the film. The extreme close up on the sword symbolises the power of the weapon and also shows how dangerous this weapon can be. As the scene carries on, a high angle shot is used to show the dominance of the female character and her involvement in the following scene that comes up.
Another extreme close up is used where the camera is focused on one of the female’s lips. This symbolises that each word she is saying creates tension within the audience. The use of digetic sound of the motorcycles creates more tension as the expression of the main protagonist face shows the fact she is about to face the biggest battle of her life.
The change of all scenes is very fast paced and creates a lot of excitement in the audience as it allows audience to think in their minds what the next scene is going to involve. As the entire fighter crew enters the room a high angle shot is used in order to show the dominance of all the male fighters.  The camera movement of panning is used to show all characters in the film and as there is a lot of fighters in the room, it seems unrealistic that the female protagonist will survive in this epic battle.
The use of mis-en scene acts a huge device for all characters. All the fighters seem to be fighting in black and white suits which symbolised that they are important people and are really focused on the job, for in this case is to kill the main female protagonist.  The swords that all the fighters carry show that they only have one intension of which is killing. The swords are scarily sharp which shows that the men mean business and are here to carry out the one job they have been told to do.
As the fighting scene commences the colour seems to change so that all the bloody scenes are in black and white. The use of black and white is used to make the scene stand out as the fighting scene is full of bloody and particularly gross. The clothes that the female is wearing is fully covered n blood which symbolises that she has taken part in a bloody war. Blood is covered all over her torso and splashes of blood are on her face.
The extreme close ups are used when the female is dissecting the fighters body parts. Extreme close ups are used when she cuts of the fighters necks, limbs and straight forward stabbing through vital body organs. As this whole scene is in black and white, the colour is not very clear which is a good thing as some audiences may find this disgusting, I know I did.
As we come to the end of the scene, the colour again is changed and the use of the colour blue is used as the background colour. The female protagonist is fighting with about 6 males and is all in dark black colour. We as the audience cannot see any of their facial features and this effect is used to show that the female is under a lot of pressure. As the colour blue can connote neutral situations it used to create an awkward atmosphere as most of the audience think that the fighting is over yet they are in for a shock.
In the last scene, a high angle shot is used to show what the damage that has been caused by the female protagonist. As you can see about 60 males bodies lying on the floor, some in pain some dead who can also connote that the female is dangerous and is a woman not to be messed around with.

Film Homework

What film genre are the most popular at present? Why do you think this is? (Consider technology, social & economic context)

At the moment I think that comedy and horror is common genre in the film world today. Comedy is a genre that makes people laugh and in today’s society I think that laughter is a huge factor amongst friends and family. Another reason why I think comedy is a popular genre is that some audiences do not expect what is going to happen in the following scene. For example, in a typical horror movie when a female turns her back, the audience know that she will either be killed or be on a running chase. Comedy is also a common genre as in today’s world a lot wars and public affairs seem to be increasing and comedy makes the audience forget about what is going on in the world and audiences mainly concentrate on the film.
Horror is a common genre in today’s film as most of the audience enjoy being scared. Due to technology, directors can now use state of the art technology in order to really scare the audience with the use of sound and on screen effects. For example, the film Saw has come up with 6 sequels to the film and has recently introduced a 3-D version with the use of state of the art technology. This is great way of attracting customers and directors are making a fortune.
Comedy spoofs are increasing with a mix of comedy and horror. Films like make fun of horror films by adding a lot of comedy scenes into the movie.  Films like this are beginning to be popular with most of the audience’s ages within the C1, D and E social economic.
What genres do you think were popular back in the 1930’s and 1940’s? Why? Give examples and show evidence of research
Genres such as gangster, musicals wars and comedy where most common in the 1930s and 1940s as many people enjoyed these genres at this time. Films like these were introduced at the “Golden age of Hollywood. This was the time when films where in black and white but where introduced in colour and there was heavy use of sound in these films. Films like “Stars” (1930) and “The adventures of robin hood (1938) where the film’s most popular in this time. With war films, many of the audiences could relate to becasue at the time world war 2 was going on.

Miss Wigly cover work

The Kick trailer shows a variety of different shots in order to create an effect to draw audiences in. In the begining of the trailer we see a close up shot
Of the supposed protagonist holding a picture of a man which symbolises that she is madly obsessed with him. As the next scene starts, another close up shot of the girl slowly feeling the her lovers car and as someone else shouts out “threes Lee Cassidy” we see a medium shot of her initial reaction which shows that she is totally in shock.
There is another close up of the girl looking through a hole to see her major crush which shows that she absolutely adores the boy and would go to extreme methods just to see him.  The genre of this film is romantic/ thriller as we see scenes during the trailer that may suggest that it is a thriller. Also, the trailer presents alternative ideology as we the two girls kissing each other passionately which suggest that they are bi sexual and also being female.
With the car scene we see a more of the romantic genre as one of the girls is sitting on the man’s lap and he caress her by touching her arm slowly. Immediately, we see a close up shot of the other girl driving and her reaction sees her best friend getting comfortable with the guy that she loves.
The trailer follows Todorovs theory as the trailer starts of with a equilibrium of a girl showing her love for the man she loves. What we don’t know is what the end of trailer is like as it ends with disequilibrium as long shot appears to show one of the girls holding a gun towards the man and suddenly a loud gunshot is heard.
The editing of the trailer just changes each scene and not much has been done as the trailer just shows a brief introduction to the film which may interest audiences. It does a very good job of briefly introducing the film as audiences may not want to see the main bits of the film.
We see a beautiful setting as the two girls are lying down with each other on a hill and see the sun set.  In this scene, a long shot is used to show the background and the two girls and shows how much a bond the two girls have.

50 Cent Reebok Advert

The 50 cent Reebok advertisements presents a lot of violence through the use of the words 50 cent uses “got shot 9 times in Jamaica queens.” Despite the fact the he survived, he says it casually and by wearing Reebok trainers it makes people think that their untouchable. Some people of the audience may find this shocking and wouldn’t want their children thinking the idea that its ok being shot 9 times I will survive if I wear a pair of Reebok trainers. In a way this sort of fake advertising, telling people that a pair of trainers will save your life in horrific situations. This is just another way of promoting gang violence and gun crime to the people in communities and this is one of the reasons why it was banned.

At the opening of the trailer, raindrops appear to falling from telephones lines as it slowly turns into red colour drops which are connoting blood. This was a close up shot as suggest more that is promoting violence. As the ASA have regulations this was partly reason why the advertisement was banned due to its blood science which connotes deaths.

The first scene of the trailer shows 2 damaged buildings and a railway track. The setting of the scene suggests that it’s a broken down neighbourhood which would be associated with gangsters, drug dealers and gang violence. The sound of police sirens is played in the background which would also connote that the area is not a safe place. A Mise –en scene is presented her when the trainer hanging off the line presents ghetto suburban area.

The company itself Reebok have glamorised violence in this way to show that their products are the best. They get a famous celebrity such as 50 cent who has a tragic scene in his life and make him endorse the product to beat their rival competitors such as Addidas and Nike. Reeboks intension is to become the best sporting wear even if they have to endorse celebrities. I think Reebok have gone over the top and may have thought the advert would be suitable but it’s not.

In my opinion I think that Reebok made this advert because they are aware of the fact that their is an audience out there. Mainly boys aged 14+ would like an advert like this as it presents violence. Boys at these ages tend to play violent video games, for example call of duty modern warfare 2 is global phenomenon and majority of the boys love the game. I think the audience that Reebok are trying to attract is C1, C2, D and E as this fits character profiles.

I think that the audience would react to this advertisement as maybe “cool.” People of this particular age group would think it’s a miracle of being shot 9 times and surviving yet some people may just laugh as they already understand the advert and have acknowledged the fact that Reebok have used such a powerful influence such as 50 cent who many young teenagers adore. The advert shows alternative ideology, a black man who is young which some of today’s viewers can relate to. Some may react and think that this is just another story of a young black youth who has done wrong in life where as some other may see this as something that can relate to. Many people have lost close people to them by vicious gun crimes and would certainly want this advertisement banned due to the fact that it’s promoting gun violence.

In my opinion I think that the advert should have banned as it is way too much violence in such a short clip. After 10 minutes of viewing it, all of the factors became clear that it’s not suitable for the eyes of Britain. A young child may see this advert and imitate the gun shooting scene which doesn’t seem suitable for the young eyes of Britain. As well as the target audience this may outrage some or some may like the idea of being shot 9 times and surviving to tell the story.
